The dragon blood tree (Dracaena draco) is a plant that occurs naturally in the Canary Islands, Cape Verde and Madeira. The dragon blood tree is the natural, "green" symbol of the island of Tenerife. The plant, up to 12 m high, is characterized by one or more trunks with a relatively dense, umbrella-shaped crown with thick leaves. It is a slow-growing plant, taking ten years to reach a height of 1 m.

If the bark is cut or the leaves are bruised, the plant secretes a reddish resin, known as dragon blood. This was used by the Romans and medieval alchemists. People believed that it was the blood of European dragons.
